27 Weeks!

27 Weeks

We have made it another week…and I am so, so thankful! Here is what is going on this week according to Baby Center:

This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (about the size of a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby’s brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don’t bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

The second trimester is drawing to a close, but as your body gears up for the final lap, you may start noticing some new symptoms. Along with an aching back, for example, you may find that your leg muscles cramp up now and then. They’re carrying extra weight, after all, and your expanding uterus is putting pressure on the veins that return blood from your legs to your heart as well as on the nerves leading from your trunk to your legs.

Unfortunately, the cramps may get worse as your pregnancy progresses. Leg cramps are more common at night but can also happen during the day. When a cramp strikes, stretching the calf muscle should give you some relief.

How far along?  27 weeks
Total weight gain:  15.5 lbs. I am only up .5 lbs from last week. Ugh…still not enough weight gain (doc said I should be gaining at least 1 lb per week). Maybe I need to be drinking 2 protein shakes per day? I want to make sure that if the baby needs to be taken early, as they are expecting, that she has some weight on her. Anyone have any good ideas or ways to put on a healthy steady weight gain?
Maternity clothes? I am loving how comfortable maternity is (especially maternity jeans) but still wearing lots of normal clothes, like sundresses, as well.
Stretch marks?  No, none have popped up yet.
Sleep:  Been sleeping great this week!
Best moment this week: When hubby and the kids got to feel baby girl get the hiccups this week. Bella said it felt like e tiny heartbeat.
Miss Anything? Nope!
Movement:  Her movements are not as frequent as they have been but when she does move, they are much stronger than I have been used to. I can tell that she is getting stronger and running out of room in there.
Food cravings:  Fruit, fruit, fruit! I seriously cannot get enough!Anything making you queasy or sick:  No.
Gender prediction: It’s a girl!
Labor Signs:  Thankfully, no!
Symptoms: Round ligament pain, spider veins, varicose veins, and a little ankle/foot swelling in the evenings.
Belly Button in or out?  In…but getting flatter 🙂
Wedding rings on or off?  On.
Happy or Moody most of the time: So happy!!!
Looking forward to: Finishing the nursery. My mom is coming into town now next weekend instead of this weekend, so I have to wait another week to get my decorating on. I am just so anxious…but know it will be worth the wait!

  1. Such a cute pic! Yay for the 2nd trimester being so successful!

As for healthy weight gain tips…

    1) Make sure you are always in a “build up” state. Eat every 3 hours minimum (protein, carbs & fats at every meal). Do not ever go more than 3- 4 hours without eating. Eat your first meal within 30 minutes of waking and continue eating often throughout the day.

    2) Incorporate calorie dense foods (nuts, nut butters, avocados, full fat organic dairy, organic pasture butter for cooking/veggies, full fat organic meats). Snack on high calorie clean foods between meals if you are the least bit hungry or have a craving (nuts are great).

    3) Always have snacks at the ready (in your purse, gym bag, car, etc.) Whole fruit and nuts work well. You never want to be hungry and not have something to grab right away. It will keep you from entering “starvation mode” at any time.

Did I mention to keep lots of nuts around?? hehe

  2. I am not sure if this post is new or not but I seem the date 6/11/13 so I was going to see. I am 30 weeks right now and also have vasa previa. I just thought we could help each other through 🙂

    • Hi Nikki, yes, this post is new! So happy you found me. It’s always nice to go through something unfamiliar with someone else by your side going through it as well. I just turned 28 weeks yesterday and have my follow up apt to check on things in 2 more weeks (I will be 30 weeks). Doc said to expect C-section between 32-36 weeks. What has yours told you to expect? Looking forward to sharing our experiences with one another. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
